Josh Rogers might’ve wondered what it took to get some attention around Eagle’s Landing Christian.
The running back and return man put up more than 1,000 all-purpose yards last year and rushed for 132 yards in the state championship game. But his teammate, Keaton Mitchell, rushed for more than 4,000 yards in his career and ran for 192 yards and four touchdowns in the same championship game, a 33-13 victory over Wesleyan for ELCA’s fifth Class A Private title in five years.
Then came Friday night. Rogers, now a senior, made his mark with 410 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, both school records, in a 58-0 victory over Heritage of Newnan.
“Josh has rushed for about 2,000 yards in his career from ninth through 11 grades, but nobody ever heard of him because of Keaton Mitchell, who’s now a phenomenal back at East Carolina,” ELCA coach Jonathan Gess said. “It’s Josh’s turn to shine. We knew he could do stuff like he did Friday night when he got the opportunity.”
Rogers is the Georgia High School Football Daily’s State Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by AstroTurf and Sports Turf.
