Mrs. Janice Ann Cooper Fortune, age 78, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020.

She was the daughter of the late Samuel Stanton Cooper and Helen Tucker Cooper of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jan was born on Sept. 4, 1942, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School. She went on to graduate from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her father stated that when Jan went to UGA, she never came back to Florida.

After graduation, Jan moved to Atlanta and worked as an airline reservationist, a bank teller, and a pre-kindergarten school teacher in West End and Cabbagetown schools. She also taught in the Spalding County School System and Woodward Academy for many years. She loved being a teacher. She also volunteered in the surgical emergency ward at Grady Memorial Hospital for several years.

She married

James Robertson Fortune Jr. on June 17, 1972, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jan lived in Griffin, Georgia for the rest of her life. She was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church, the Garden Club of Griffin, the Altar Guild for St. George’s Episcopal Church, and served on the Board of Directors of St. George’s Episcopal School. She was also a member of the Griffin Spalding Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Robertson Fortune Jr., and daughters, Elizabeth Ashley Fortune Whitehurst (Gary), and Anne Steele Fortune Hinshaw (Mark), and four wonderful grandchildren whom she loved very much: Leila Havens Hinshaw, Samuel Patrick Hinshaw, Thomas Robertson Whitehurst, and James Cooper Whitehurst. She

is also survived by

her brother, Dr. Stanton T. Cooper of Melbourne, Florida, and sister-in-law, Agnes Scott Fortune of Alexandria, Virginia.

A private memorial service will be conducted at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Conner-Westbury Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Eternal Hope Hospice, our many kind caregivers, and especially Kathy Rawls.

The family will receive visitors at their home on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, at noon. In

lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a contribution be made to either St. George’s Episcopal School or the Salvation Army.
