The pilot of a private plane safely made an emergency landing Sunday afternoon on a busy highway in Peachtree City.
The forced landing occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Georgia Highway 54 near a Publix grocery store in Peachtree City. No injuries of the pilot and passenger were reported, and the plane was not damaged, according to the Peachtree City Police Department.
“What do you do when you’re flying over Peachtree City and have plane trouble? You land on HWY 54 in front of Publix!” read a Facebook post made Sunday afternoon by the PCPD.
The forced landing was due to a reported fire in the plane’s cockpit area, A PCPD spokesman told The Citizen. The Maule M7 plane was piloted by a 55-year-old flight instructor, and one passenger was onboard at the time of the incident.
The plane is reported to have been on the way to an airport in Locust Grove after taking off from the Cartersville Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration is continuing to investigate the incident.
No further details were available at press time on Monday.
