A Spalding County woman was killed Thursday night in Newnan, and her boyfriend is now in custody in connection with her death.

Carlesha Wells, 25, of Griffin, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. She was unresponsive when officers arrived on the scene, where emergency medical condition was provided. She was pronounced dead Thursday at a Coweta County hospital.

According to Newnan Police Department Deputy Chief Mark Cooper, officers responded around 6:15 p.m. Thursday to reports of a gunshot and a female victim down at a Newnan residence. They found Wells, formerly of Newnan, at the residence.

An NPD investigation determined Wells became involved in an altercation with her boyfriend, Marcus Strozier Jr. of Newnan. The altercation became physical on the front steps of the residence when a weapon was discharged and Wells was struck.

Strozier initially fled the scene on foot, and officers were actively searching for him Thursday before he turned himself in to detectives.

Strozier is currently in custody.
