A Spalding County grand jury has indicted a Griffin woman on murder charges in connection with the Oct. 6, 2020 death of her boyfriend.

Renita Thomas, 25, is facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

She is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Oct. 13 in Spalding County Superior Court.

According to the Griffin Police Department, officers responded to a call to Johnny Whitlock’s Ellis Road residence around 7 p.m., Oct. 6, 2020. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

Whitlock, 40, was transported to Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

During a preliminary hearing held for Thomas in December 2020, GPD Investigator Neosha Bloodser testified that Thomas reportedly told police the two had argued over her cell phone, which Whitlock is said to have taken and not given back to Thomas.

Thomas told Bloodser she was sitting down with an AR-15 during the argument when Whitlock reportedly grabbed the barrel and tugged it before the gun went off, according to Blooder’s testimony.

Bloodser also testified that the crime scene did not match what Thomas told police.

Thomas is being held in the Spalding County Jail.
