Mattie Sue Starks Owens turns 87 on Sept. 18 and her family hopes you will send her a birthday card.

Owens has deep ties to Griffin. Though she was born in Locust Grove, she moved to Griffin as a child and lived on North Hill Street for many years. She worked for the local school system in the nutrition department for much of her career before moving to Atlanta to work in the school system there.

Her niece Shirley Ali also works for Griffin-Spalding County Schools. She said her aunt has not asked for gifts in recent years but has instead had a special request of her family.

“For Aunt Sue’s last two birthdays, she wanted us to come and read scriptures. We just sit down and read scriptures and it was really special because she is such a faithful lady who trusts God,” Ali said.

Ali said her aunt loves to receive cards.

“She loves cards. I guess I get that from her too,” she said. “She gets her inspiration from reading the different verses in them and she said ‘They could have thought about someone else, but they thought about me!”

For Mothers Day, the family held a drive-by parade for “Aunt Sue” and family members would sit on the porch while Owens sat in the carport for a visit. They plan to do another parade when they deliver the cards to her later this month.

Owens is grandmother to 11 grandchildren who affectionately call her “ ‘Granny Do’ ‘cause Granny will do anything.”

Ali called her aunt a “hard-working lady who has had a hard life.” Of Owen’s eight children, four have passed away, two within two weeks of each other.

“I love her, I really, really do,” said Ali.

Cards for Mattie Sue Starks Owens can be mailed to Shirley Ali at 1679 Piedmont Road, Griffin GA 30224.
