If at-home learning has caused you to desire a deeper engagement with your child’s learning, the Griffin-Spalding County School System has a variety of free resources available to help you support their education.
Melinda Owens, Family and Community Engagement Specialist for the Griffin-Spalding County School System, helps families become more engaged in student learning. She has assembled a list of resources provided by the school system to parents and families.
One such resource is the Rigorous Curriculum Dialogue that can be found on the school system’s website. The site, which was designed for parents, breaks down what students should know by grade level and subject matter.
If a student is having difficulty in an area, parents can use this resource to easily see an overview of what their students should be learning, vocabulary words and tips for how they can help their students learn the necessary concepts.
The Rigorous Curriculum Dialogue can be found online at https://sites.google.com/gscs.org/rigorous-curriculum-dialogue/home.
If navigating the technology necessary for at-home learning is a challenge, the system has created a variety of parent tutorials on how to use Chromebooks, Google Meet, Seesaw and Google Classroom — all tools used by GSCS teachers during at-home learning.
Parent tutorials can be found online at https://sites.google.com/gscs.org/instructionaltechtu torials/parent-tutorials/chromebooks
If you want more help with Google Classroom than the tutorial provides, there will be two upcoming events to help you learn more. Owens said these events are not limited to parents alone but are open to anyone who is helping a student with at-home learning including other family members, childcare centers and community members.
“We want to support not just parents but all caregivers who are helping scholars during remote learning,” Owens said.
The events will both be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 with the first at 12 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m. They will be recorded for those who are not able to attend these times. Registration is required and can be completed online at https://forms.gle/iiiae Uu4DdbEZPr98
The school system also offers a monthly online newsletter, has a resource center in each school and at the central office and offers support through social media channels such as Facebook under GSCS Parent Engagement.
