The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia is showing its support for illegal immigrants, and its lack of concern for Georgia taxpayers.

The ACLU of Georgia issued a statement on Monday urging the Board of Regents to reject a proposal that would limit the attendance of illegal immigrants at state colleges and universities, according to The Associated Press.

A committee has recommended prohibiting the schools from accepting illegal immigrant applicants if the school has rejected any academically qualified applicants in the two most recent academic years.

The proposal would also require each school to verify the legal presence in the United States of each person applying for resident tuition status.

We believe the ACLU is ignoring one simple fact — it is the Georgia taxpayers who fund the colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia. Why should taxpayers have to pay for the education of someone who is in the country illegally?

Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to take the place of a Georgia taxpayer or the son or daughter of a Georgia taxpayer. It’s that simple.

We hope the Board of Regents stands up to the ACLU, which has developed into a far-left advocacy group over the years.

Taxpayers have been battered by a poor economy for several years, and rejecting the committee recommendation would be another slap in the face for taxpayers.
