Like other communities, Griffin has had its share of success stories as well as disappointments when it comes to attracting new industry and retaining existing industry.

The community was hit hard as textile plants began closing. Nacom Corp. and other plants helped Griffin-Spalding County make the transition away from a textile-based economy. But, unfortunately, Nacom and some other large employers have shut down plants in Griffin.

However, as manufacturing plants have come and gone, Southern Crescent Technical College, formerly Griffin Technical College, has remained a major player in the local economy.

The college’s main purpose has always been to provide training for its students. But the college provides jobs for instructors, administrators and support staff. And, the college produces graduates trained for “in-demand” fields. The availability of a trained workforce is a tool that the Griffin-Spalding Development Authority can use as it seeks to attract new industry.

Recently, the Griffin Technical College Foundation hosted its fifth annual Red Carpet Gala to raise money for Southern Crescent Technical College. The gala generated about $30,000 for the college.

The money will be available for campus expansion, scholarships and up-to-date technology and equipment.

The Griffin Technical College Foundation recognizes the critical role of the college in the community, and we hope community leaders and area residents also will continue to support Southern Crescent Technical College.
