With the starting quarterback injured and the backup out most of the week on a field trip, Robert Jackson filled in and led Faith Christian Academy to a rousing 48-20 win Friday night against visiting Twiggs Academy in ICSGA 8-man football.

Jackson, the 2008 Griffin Daily News Player of the Year, scored on touchdown runs of 20, 24, 37 and 37 yards as the Lions (2-1) won their home opener and Twiggs Academy (0-2) remained winless.

FCA running back Aaron Varela posted the game’s first score on a 3-yard touchdown run. Jackson followed with touchdown runs of 24 and 37 yards as the Lions built a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Jackson scored on a 20-yard run in the second quarter of a game where the Lions led 32-6 at the half.

Faith Christian’s Willie Kennedy returned the second half opening kickoff 65 yards for another touchdown. Jackson added another score on a 37-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Lions.

Despite the victory, first-year Lions head coach Nelson Grist thought his team played sloppy at times.

“We played down to their level rather than making them play up to our level,” said Grist. “We have a long way to go before we play Ballard in two weeks. If we play like we did tonight we’ll be in trouble.”
