The Hon. David J. Bailey, a former mayor of Griffin for two terms, whose public spirit and progressiveness both in and out of that office announced as again a candidate for that office, at the solicitation of his many friends.
Mr. E.T. Wright, of Zebulon, and Miss Ida Hammond, the daughter of County Commissioner C.M. Hammond, of Spalding, were married at the ordinary’s office, the Rev. J.A. Drewry officiating. This was a popular couple and they had the best wishes of scores of friends.
Mrs. T.E. Patterson, Mrs. L.P. Blanton and Miss Olive Thomas returned from Thomaston, where they attended the annual meeting of the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Griffin district.
J.J. Mangham and J.W. Mangham, two of Griffin’s best known business men, and associates purchased, at a cost of $32,000, forty-two acres of land in Atlanta, on the east side of Highland Avenue3. The purchasers, under the name of Greater Atlanta Land Company, applied for a charter, and was said would develop the property into a residential park.

A3C Jimmy Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Smith, assisted in rescue operations at a plane crash in a western state. The pilot of the plane was killed. He was stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Denver, Colo. Airman Smith is a 1959 graduate of Griffin High School.
James Fortune was named to the dean’s list at Baylor School For Boys at Chattanooga, Tenn. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Fortune.
Miss Julia Britt Steanson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Steanson, was listed to the 1960-61 edition of “Who’s Who In American Colleges and Universities.” Miss Steanson, a student at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., was active in campus affairs at the college.
Lila Copeland, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.J. Copeland, was elected recording secretary of the Athenean Women’s Social Club at Baylor University where she was a student.

Spalding Ford donated Griffin High caps to the Band of Gold to sell as a fund raising project. Co-owners Alan Reeves and Don Brock presented them to Drum Major Allison Brown and Band Director Larry Mathis.
Tammy L. Ivie was named to the dean’s list for the summer quarter in the physical therapy program at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Robert Drennan Easterling an electrical engineering major, was named to the dean’s list for summer quarter at Georgia Tech.
Gregory Edward Higgins an industrial management major at Georgia Tech, was named to the dean’s list for summer quarter.

Phillip’s Staffing, a Greenville, S.C. based full-service staffing company, awarded its Griffin branch with the President’s Club award. The branch earned the award by exceeding its sales goals for the 1999-2000 fiscal year.
The friends and family of Polly Wilson Tanner helped her celebrate her 101st birthday. Tanner was born in Spalding County. She spent 45 years as a teacher, including 23 years as a second-grade teacher at Third Ward School in Griffin.
Don Perry, of Caterpillar, presented a $15,000 donation to Wayne Brown and John Newton Sr. for the Foundation of Griffin Technical College.
Davis Morris Jr. was the 2000 recipient of the annual scholarship awarded by the Emancipation Committee. The Griffin High School graduate was enrolled at Morris Brown College and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Morris.

Griffin High School star basketball player Jay Brown signed a national letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Georgia Perimeter College.
Melissa Y. Jefferson, the daughter of Carolyn Jefferson Allen and J.C. Allen Jr. was chose as a state finalist Miss Georgia American Coed Pageant to be conducted at the Westin Atlanta North in Atlanta.
The Griffin Moose Lodge sponsored a benefit for the Spalding County Sheriff’s Department Junior Deputy program. The lodge presented a check to the department for $7,500.
