If there was a chance for a “do-over,” the Spalding 10/11 All Star Little League baseball team would start the 2010 State Tournament all over again.
Spalding lost its third straight state tournament game Tuesday evening, falling to East Marietta 31-2 in Pool A play at Wyomia Tyus Park in a game that was called after four innings due to the mercy rule.
This big loss followed two other blowout losses for Spalding — a 12-2 loss to Cartersville last Saturday and a 19-2 loss to Masters City (Augusta) on Monday.
Spalding took a 1-0 lead against East Marietta in the first inning Tuesday, as Donavan Kirkland singled, stole second and third and scored on a single by Terriez Fuller.
East Marietta’s bats erupted from there, scoring 11 runs in the second, 8 runs in the third and 12 in the fourth for their 31 total runs.
Fuller was able to score Spalding’s second run in the bottom of the fourth. He wallked, stole second and came home on a single by Ryan Stover.
Spalding plays its final Pool A game this evening against Toccoa. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
Spalding was 20-1 coming into the state tourney and looked to be contenders for the state title.
Now it looks like the plucky local squad may have to play for pride and try to put a loss on Toccoa’s record.
