“It’s a one-time-a-year event where agencies of the United Way can seek assistance in getting some work done,” said Cindy Jones of the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce.
Leadership Griffin-Spalding will provide the workers for the project. United Way has done “Day of Caring” events in other communities but this is the first time it has come to Spalding County.
On Friday, volunteers will be trimming hedges, cutting the grass and cleaning the windows at Midway Recovery on South 10th Street from 1 to 3 p.m. On Saturday, three projects will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. These will be pressure-washing at the offices of the Flint River Council of the Boy Scouts of America on Zebulon Road, yard work at The Salvation Army House of Hope on North 13th Street and indoor cleaning at the Abundant Life Soup Kitchen on North 10th Street.
Those who are not part of Leadership Griffin-Spalding are welcome to participate.
“If citizens would like to come out and volunteer, they do not have to be part of the leadership program,” Jones said. “Anyone can come to any of the (work sites) and lend a hand.”
Help with supplies has been requested. Bottled water, candy bars, granola and snack bars, hard candy and gum, travel hand wipes, hand sanitizer and rubber gloves will be needed for the volunteers.
Chick-fil-A will provide lunches to participants. Those interested in finding out more information should call the chamber at 770-228-8200. Those interested in donating supplies should bring them to the Griffin Regional Welcome Center, at the intersection of Hill Street and Broad Street.
