The Griffin High girls tennis team’s first region championship team since 1974 fell 4-0 to Hardaway on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs at the Dr. Stu Baker Memorial Tennis Complex on the campus of Griffin High School.

“They were really good,” Griffin High tennis coach Will Orbin said of the Region 1-AAAA fourth seeded Hardaway Lady Golden Hawks.

Amy Davis lost to Laura Chapman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Rebecca Hill lost to Michelle Nickerson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Mallett and Bryoni Coggins lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jamillia Burges and Kyra Ellison.

Griffin’s No. 3 singles player, Emily Warwick, trailed Amber Thomas 6-2 when the overall team match was decided.

Region 4-AAAA champion Griffin, which is on spring break, forfeited a point at No. 2 doubles.

“We were strong in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles all year and we were strong again today,” said Hardaway head coach Jonathan Gibson.

The match was delayed an hour because of rain.

“It was one heck of a season,” said Orbin, a long-time football coach who coached tennis for the first time ever. “It has been a pleasure to coach these girls.”
