COVINGTON, Ga. — The Spalding High girls track and field team continued its torrid pace this season by scoring 121 1/2 points to win it third meet in a row and for the fourth time in the last five meets by topping all in a 10-team meet Saturday at Alcovy High School.

“What an amazing track meet,” said Spalding head coach Dolores Owen, whose team has also won a six-team meet at Griffin, a 12-team meet at Sandy Creek and a four-team meet at Lamar County. “We were the only small school there, but left quite an impression.”

“On the virtual meet screen on the website we were picked to finish fifth, but guess what?,” asked Owen. “We won it all again. The kids are amazing. They are working so hard at becoming the best they can be by region (April 24 and 26 at Woodward Academy).”

To top it off, Spalding won the meet competing without two of its top athletes (Dee Dee Matthews and Precious Martin) while another (Jenna Wesley) was at less than full strength because of seasonal allergies and a fourth, Stanariel Phinazee, was battling a sore foot.

Mt. Zion finished runner-up with 102.50 points, while Alcovy (92), Winder-Barrow (77.50), Heritage (73.50), Miller Grove (68.0), Decatur (47), Meadowcreek (46), Morrow (42) and Jones County (45) comprised the rest of the field.

“It was hot out there, but the girls adapted and ran very well,” said Owen.
