A local driver accidentally hit the accelerator and collided with the Economy Rent-A-Car building on West Taylor Street Monday afternoon.

“A customer just drove through by accident,” said Linda Blevins, the manager of the business. “She put her foot on the gas instead of the brake.”

Patrolman R. Bryan Jones of the Griffin Police Department said Regina Doviak of Griffin was the driver of the vehicle, a Suzuki SX4 belonging to the rental company.

“I’m sure it was just an accident,” he said.

Battalion Chief Roger Slaughter of Griffin Fire-Rescue said he got the call at 3:17 p.m. When he arrived, the car was 4 feet into the building.

Griffin Fire-Rescue removed the car just after 3:30 p.m. The impact tore the metal frame away from the floor of the building and bent the door inward. Shattered glass littered the ground around the impact zone.

Jones said that because the accident occurred on private property he will not be filing any charges.
