Participants in One Town, One Goal discussed the planned April 10 Build Day at a meeting at One Griffin Center Thursday afternoon.

“Last year was very successful,” said Griffin Special Projects Coordinator Vicki Hyatt, who is in charge of the program.

This year’s Build Day, like last year’s, will be coordinated with the Kiwanis Club of Griffin’s One Day service project.

Last year’s project was in the Thomaston Mill Village and ran concurrently with the city of Griffin’s use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to rehabilitate the water and sewer facilities in the area. This year’s project will take place in a nearby area, bounded by 13th Street, Ninth Street, Orange Street and Quilly Street, in which the city is undertaking similar work.

The Kiwanis Club will work on projects such as butterfly gardens, park benches and picnic tables at Eighth Street Baptist Church; One Town, One Goal will focus on refurbishing owner-occupied houses in the area.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. on April 10. Griffin Technical College Drafting Program Coordinator Mike Howard will be in charge of providing food for the event, which will include a block party at lunchtime.

Hyatt and Pastor Daryl Coleman discussed checking out the 11 owner-occupied houses in the work area that will be worked on. Hyatt said she will send building inspectors to determine the exact condition of the houses; Coleman will talk to homeowners to see what help they would like.
