Five players — Richard Bennefield (14 points), Blake Yancey and Tyler Smith (12 each), Anthony Lewis (11) and Austin Craft (10) — scored in double figures Tuesday as Griffin Christian topped last-place Heirway Christian 79-32 in GISA Region 4-AA boys basketball.

Third-place Griffin Christian (19-4 overall, 9-2 region) led the Eagles 25-2 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, as GCHS head coach Mic Savage emptied his bench the last three quarters.

The Eagles (1-17, 0-12) lost their 16th in a row, while Griffin Christian won its sixth in a row heading into tonight’s home game against defending state champ Arlington (17-1, 12-0).

“We’re going to have to play a solid 32 minutes of basketball,” said Savage, whose team lost to Arlington 84-61 on Jan. 15 after Arlington went on a 20-0 run in the third quarter to go up 25 points. “I feel like the key is to stop their fast break and keep them off the boards on offense.”
