Our old friend John D. Holman not only received our congratulations at being named census enumerator for Griffin, but also announced as candidate of county commissioner. Honors and offices come fast when they come.
Cols. Beck, Flynt, Daniel, Cleveland, Goodrich, Patterson and Harben were Griffin lawyers in attendance at the opening of Pike superior court in Zebulon.
Ground was broken on a new brick livery stable for A.S. Blake on the lot occupied by him in the rear of the Head Drug Company. It was 90-by-90 feet and replaced the famous old Griffin landmark so long known as Powell’s stable.
Capt. James W. English of Atlanta, sent to Roswell H. Drake a check for $100 to be used in defraying the expenses of the new hospital. Mr. English was a native of Griffin, and still cherished a love and devotion to Griffin and its enterprises.

Navy Fireman Marvin Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Barnes of Griffin, was serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash.
Navy Radioman Seaman Dewey F. Carver, of Griffin, serving aboard the destroyer USS Davis, took part in Operation “Skyhook,” a balloon launching and recovery project conducted in the Caribbean.
Airman 3rd Class Robert T. King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bartow T. King, Pomona, arrived at Osan Air Base, Korea. He was assigned to the 6314th Field Maintenance Squadron.
Navy Seaman Bobby G. Goolsby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barney D. Goolsby of Griffin, was serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash.

Airman Michael K. Banks, nephew of Effir M. Fuller of Milner, graduated from the U.S. Air Force security police specialist course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1984 graduate of Lamar County Comprehensive High School in Barnesville.
Marine Pfc. Randy S. Martin, son of Jerry C. and Frances I. Martin of Griffin, reported for duty with 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 1984 graduate of Pike County High School.
Marine Sgt. Charles S. Price, son of Senoia and Mary O. Price of Jackson, was awarded a Meritorious Mast while serving with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Calif. He is a 1976 graduate of Jackson High School.
Airman Wayne T. Rhodes, son of Thomas T. and Joan P. Rhodes of Griffin, graduated from the U.S. Air Force security police specialist course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is a 1984 graduate of Pike County High School.

Robert and Pauline Tatum celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were honored with a reception at their home given by their children. They have five children, Anne Hoch, the late Bob Tatum, Ted Tatum, Fred Tatum and Jane Clark.
Laura Smallwood of the Kiwaniannes presented a check to members for the Hope Health Clinic, Dr. Faith Andrews, Charlotte Haymes and Delores Evans.
Army Reserve Pfc. Matthew Pritts graduated from the petroleum supply specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va. He is the son of Roy A. and stepson of Corrine M. Pritts of Griffin. The private is a 1999 graduate of Griffin High School.
As part of the annual Griffin Kiwanis Club Girl Scout recognition day, club president Doug Hollberg presented a $4,000 check to Brenda Strozier, executive director of Pine Valley Girl Scout Council.

Kindergartners at Cowan Road Elementary School participated in a mock wedding of the letters “Q” and “U”. The bride was Macie Lopez and the groom was Nathan Poore.
James Lindsey II, who teaches chorus at both Spalding and Griffin high schools, took the Spalding County Artistic Touring Ensemble to Hawaii for a competition. The group won the grand prize.
Asia Nelé Grant, 5, was chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Georgia Pageant held at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Alpharetta. Miss Grant’s activities included dancing, singing, modeling and tumbling.
Students were enjoying using the new science lab at Orrs Elementary School. Fifth grade students made paper mache volcanoes. Then they made the volcanoes erupt. The science lab is open to all grade levels at Orrs.
