From the Annals of 1910

E.C. Smith, J.H. Smith and Douglas Glessner, of this place, Arnold Henderson, of Hampton, and Gus Morrow, of Jonesboro, returned from a week’s fishing at Homosassa and other points in Fla. As evidence of their good luck, they shipped a nice lot to their families.

Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Bass and their son and daughter, Haskell Bass and Miss Mary Bass, of this place, and Mrs. C.C. Bass, of Rome, returned from a delightful trip to Cuba.

A beautiful event was the dinner given by Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart, at their home on South Hill Street, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Towns Daniel. The attractive home was prettily decorated with a quantity of spring flowers, yellow jonquils and daffodils, white hyacinths and narcissi.

The Music Club met with Miss Rebecca Nall and enjoyed selections from Schubert. Mrs. Will Wheaton, Mrs. Robert Daniel and Mrs. Cliff Thornton were the vocal soloists. Mrs. Richard Dean, Mrs. Robert Berry, Miss Mary Hunton and Miss Helen Griffin rendered piano selections.

Navy Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Peter J. McConnell, son of Mr. and Mrs. George D. McConnell Sr., of Griffin, was serving with Composite Photographic Squadron 63 at the Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, Calif.

Army Sgt. Carl Dukes, son of Mrs. Sallie F. Bryant of Griffin, participated with other personnel from the 24th Infantry Division in Exercise Winter Shield at the Grafenwohr-Hohenfels training area in southern Germany.

Carole George, a student at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, was cast for the role of Helena in the play “The Boor” presented by the Oglethorpe University Players. Miss George is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. George of Griffin.

Recruit Thomas W. Bogey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Winfred H. Bogey of Griffin, was assigned to Company D, 8th Battalion, 2nd Training Regiment of the U.S. Army Training Center, Infantry, at Fort Jackson, S.C., where he was undergoing eight weeks of basic combat training.

Brownie Troop 267 from Crescent School visited Higgins Angus Farm in Brooks. This was one of their annual field trips. Troop leaders were Hanna Day and Patricia Jones.

Ed Whatley and President Bob Smith of the American Business Clubs, Griffin Chapter, presented certificates of appreciation to Jeannie Crowder and Lisa Jones, recognizing their service to the patients at Spalding Convalescent Center during Christmas. The two women went shopping for the patients and provided other season treats with the club’s financing them.

Superintendent Charles Green of the Griffin-Spalding School System presented plaques to Paul Farr and Mrs. Orville Burson, who were honored as the STAR student and teacher. The Griffin Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the STAR program locally.

Some of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey’s Circus, which were performing, in Atlanta came to Moore Elementary School. Third graders at the school and children of the Head Start Program were the guests of six clowns and two show girls who presented circus acts of juggling, unicycling, and clowning for them.

Kiwanianne’s Laura Smallwood and Odelle Dodson made a donation from proceeds from the sale of Korn Dawgs at the Spalding County Fair to Griffin Police Cpl. Tommy Harrison for the Special Olympics.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Kendall C. Gaston, son of Charles and Willie Gaston of Griffin, completed the tactical intelligence systems maintenance course. Gaston is a 1998 graduate of Griffin High School.

Army Pvt. Leon S. Wazir graduated from combat engineer advanced individual training (AIT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. Wazir is the son of Anne T. and stepson of Gregory R. Wilson of Milner. In 1999, he graduated from Griffin High School.

Members of the Griffin High School Bears Players, under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Gresham, read and acted out stories by Dr. Seuss for the students at Anne Street Elementary. The performance was part of Griffin High School’s week-long Read Across America Celebration.

Air Force Airman Phillip C. Brady graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Brady is the son of Shannon Brady of Griffin. He is a 2004 graduate of Griffin High School.

Lisa Scandrick Evans was training at Ft. Stewart for her deployment to Iraq. Lisa had been in active service for 10 years. She is the daughter of Thelma Watts. She graduated from Griffin High School in 1986.

Willie C. Brittain was station at Ft. Stewart in Calif. for training for his deployment to Iraq. He joined the National Guard HHC48 Brigade in Sept. 2003 and completed his basic training June, 2004 at Ft. Benning, Ga.
