YEAR IN REVIEW: In August, ’Round Here High School Football… Takes center stage

As the calendar turned from July to August local sports fans caught their first glimpses of the areas five football teams.

Yes, that’s right, five teams. Skipstone Academy formed a team to played eight-man football in the ICSGA where it joined Faith Christian Academy in its second year of existence. Griffin Christian began its fourth year playing GISA, while Spalding High began its 10th year playing GHSA and Griffin High was celebrating 99th years of gridiron glory.

On Aug. 1, the Griffin and Spalding High football teams opened practice.

On Aug 13, the Griffin High softball team opened the season with a 7-2 loss at Luella.

On Aug. 12, Whitewater High baseball standout Miles Head signed with the Boston Red Sox for third-round money as promised by the club. The slugger, with Griffin ties, was drafted in the 26th round by the Boston Red Sox in June.

The week of Aug. 14, Griffin High’s football team was ranked No. 7 in the first preseason poll of the season.

On Aug. 14, the Spalding High girl’s softball team opened the season in the annual Diamond Classic at Volunteer Park with a 9-5 win against Lamar County.

On Aug. 15, the Spalding High football team got a 15-yard touchdown run from Zay Sharp, a 40-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Powell Krepps to Dwight Allison, a safety by Grayson Jones and a 56-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Jeff Gauldin to defeat visiting Morrow 21-20 in a preseason scrimmage.

On Aug. 21, the Griffin High football team played No. 1-state ranked Marist to a 7-all tie in a preseason scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. On the same night, Faith Christian’s football team dropped its season opener 52-20 while Griffin Christian won its season opened 26-14.

On Aug. 22, the Spalding High cross country team opened the season in a home meet. The Lady Jags placed third in a seven-team field, while the Jags placed fifth in a 10-team field. SHS’s best individual finishes came from Bryan Cronan (third-place time of 18:14) and Jenna Wesley (seventh-place time of 22:24).

On Aug. 25, the Griffin High football team was ranked No. 6 in the preseason Associated Press poll. Griffin has been preseason ranked the past five years.

On Aug. 25, the local public high school softball teams remained undefeated on the season — the Griffin High Lady Bears (7-0) by defeating Dutchtown 9-1 and the Spalding High Lady Jags (7-0-1) by defeating Woodland-Stockbridge 11-3.

On Aug. 28, the Griffin High football team opened the season with a 27-0 win against visiting Dunwoody. Spalding lost its opener 31-0 at Lamar County. Griffin Christian improved to 2-0 with a 13-7 win at Fullington. IN eight-man football, Skipstone lost its first game in school history 54-6 at LaFayette, while Faith Christian posted its first win of the season 28-14 in its home opener against Heritage Christian.

On Aug. 30, the Griffin High football team moved from No. 6 to No. 2 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class AAAA poll on a weekend where four ranked teams above them lost.
