The Griffin High and Griffin Christian High boys and girls basketball teams will be in action tonight in region play.

The Bears of Griffin (1-4 overall, 0-2 Region 4-AAAA) will face the Mt. Zion Bulldogs at The House and head basketball coach Deon Daniel hopes his guys will be looking forward to the game.

“I know the guys will be excited to play their first game at home, for sure,” Daniel said. “We’ve been on the road in all our games this year.”

Daniel said it’s way too early to tell how good his team will be this year. They can score points, but they just can’t seem to finish games.

“We’ve got to gel as a team,” he said, “We’ve got to come together.”

Mt. Zion, coming off a loss to North Clayton, is senior-laden and experienced, while Griffin only boasts four seniors — guards Denarius Appling and Meredith Beck, Jr. and guard/forwards Omar and Demarr Bowman, twins who didn’t play last season.

The Lady Bears (0-2, 0-2) will look to get on the winning track and get revenge on Mt. Zion, the team that knocked Griffin out of the region playoffs last year. The girls start at 6 p.m.

Griffin Christian’s teams will travel to play GISA Region 4-AA foe Colonial Hills tonight, starting with girls action at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Crusaders (1-5, 0-2) are coming off a five-point loss to region foe Furtah last Friday. The six Lady Crusaders players will try to survive on their heart and guts and pull out a road win.

The Crusaders (6-2 overall, 1-1 region) will look to improve their overall and region record tonight by beating Colonial Hills.

GCHS must make second-half shots. They only scored nine in the 3rd quarter against Furtah, leading to the loss.
