Griffin won both meetings, topping the Fighting Patriots 35-28 at The Battlefield in the second round of the 2005 state playoffs and 30-0 at Memorial Stadium in the opening round of the 2004 playoffs.
*****
COACHING HISTORY: Rodney Walker, the head coach at Mary Persons in Forsyth, Ga., since 2004, was the head coach during the first meeting in the series.
Sandy Creek’s current coach, Chip Walker, Rodney Walker’s son, was the Patriots head coach for the second meeting.
*****
HEAD COACHING CONNECTION: Chip Walker is only the third coach in the 17-year history of Sandy Creek High School. While Chip Walker has been the team’s head coach since 2005, his dad, Rodney Walker, guided the team from 1999-2004. Don Tyre coached the team from its inception in 1992 until 1998.
After leaving the team in 1998, Tyre coached for a season in 1999 at Griffin under then Bears head coach Daryl Jones. Current Bears head coach Steve DeVoursney, in his ninth year at Griffin, was the defensive coordinator on the 1999 GHS team.
