Wanda J. Goins, 44, of 1442 Experiment St., Apartment A, Griffin, was arrested and charged with theft by deception after she deceived a 71-year-old businessman by telling him that her children had been in a horrible traffic accident and they had been transported to a hospital in Atlanta.
Goins caught the businessman at a busy time, and wanted money for gas to get to her children. It wasn’t until after she left the business that the businessman became concerned and learned he had been tricked by Goins.
Investigators believe there may be more victims, and that the victims have not filed reports with local law enforcement.
Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart said that with the approaching holiday season there will be more of these types of crimes committed and “we are trying to better alert the community.”
Stewart said he does not tolerate the targeting of the elderly and will personally see that the persons involved are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Anyone who feels that he or she may be the victim of a “flimflam” is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office.
