There will be a ceremony honoring all veterans Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s going to be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park,” said Jim King, commander of American Legion Post 15 and the organizer of the event.

If it rains, the event will be moved to the new building at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds on South Hill Street.

King described how Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, to celebrate the end of World War I. In 1954, then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower expanded it to honor all veterans.

“We want all veterans, families and anyone in the community who can to be there for the ceremonies,” King said.

There will not be a speaker this year. Instead, the Griffin High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) will post the flags of the branches of the United States armed forces, while the Spalding High School JROTC will present colors.

“We will recognize all the different veterans’ organizations in and around Griffin,” he said.

Brick pavers for Oak Hill Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be dedicated at the event. These pavers bear the veteran’s name, rank and branch of service.

The ceremony will end with Tom Moore playing “Taps” on his bugle in honor of veterans who have died.

Veterans Memorial Park is across Memorial Drive from the Flint River Regional Library. Those interested in finding out more information should contact King on his cell phone at 404-557-2313 or call Daniel Ham at 770-227-9122.
