With three shutouts already on the books this season, the Griffin High Bears defense has a lot to be proud of. A fourth shutout would match a total not reached since the 1990 state semifinal team.

While shutouts are nothing new for Griffin — the Bears reached the three- shutout mark four times since then (1991, 2005, 2006 and 2008) — that total is far from the school record of 8 reached in 1937.

Griffin blanked the opposition in its first three games and last five games that season, the only points coming in a 38-12 win against Bowdon in the fourth game.

The 1931 and 1942 teams had 7 shutouts each in an 11-game season, while the 1948 and 1961 teams posted 6 shutouts in 10 games.

Griffin teams to reach the 5-shutout plateau in a season included the 1924, 1933, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1959, 1962 and 1975 squads.

Griffin teams to reach the 4-shutout level included the 1922, 1926, 1953, 1958, 1971, 1978, 1979, 1984 and 1990 teams.

Those Griffin teams to log three shutouts in a season include: 1923, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1930, 1963, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1991, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009, which brings us to tonight as the Bears gun for their fourth shutout this season against a Jonesboro team (2-5 overall, 1-4 Region 4-AAAA) that has already been shutout three times this season.
