According to Butts County Sheriff Gene Pope, the Tuesday afternoon arrests of Anton Sowell and Zenya Concepcion, two individuals suspected of involvement in a recent multi-county burglary ring, may have resulted in additional information in those many cases.
Pope said Tuesday that an address discovered in the suspects’ vehicle had led to a search warrant that was to be executed later that day in Clayton County. The Butts County sheriff now says that effort led to the recovery of evidence that may link Sowell and Concepcion to specific crimes.
“They recovered some computers and flat-screen TVs with the serial numbers scratched off, drugs and money,” Pope said. “Clayton County kept the money, but the computers and TVs are here in Butts County.”
When asked if these are items that match the general description of belongings stolen in any of the burglaries, Pope said, “We’ve had over 20 burglaries in the five of six counties involved in this. From what I understand, computers and TVs were some of the items stolen from some of these residences.”
He went on to say that although the serial numbers on these objects had been scratched off, his office is attempting to identify them.
As for Sowell and Concepcion, Pope said both suspects have been interviewed by numerous law enforcement agencies following their arrests.
“They’ve been interviewed by all the counties involved. One of the suspects has been more cooperative ... but as far as the burglaries are concerned, we have been given information to substantiate what we already know,” he said.
Despite the multitude of interviews that have taken place since the suspects’ Tuesday arrest, officials are no closer to apprehending additional suspects who remain at large.
“We don’t have any information on any other parties at this time,” Pope said.
Sowell and Concepcion remain incarcerated in the Butts County Jail, facing charges stemming from the chase that concluded in Flovilla when Pope fired a single shot at a tire of the fleeing vehicle.
“Right now, they’re being charged with aggravated assault on two officers and fleeing and attempting to elude. For now, that’s enough to hold them while we try to gather additional information on other activities they may have been involved in,” Pope said.
With regard to the recent string of residential burglaries in the Griffin area believed to have been committed by the same suspects targeting homes in surrounding counties, Spalding County authorities on Wednesday said that burglary charges against Sowell and Concepcion are forthcoming.
