From the Annals of 1909

Thomas G. Barfield, of Sunny Side, rode into town with five big bales of cotton on a two-horse wagon. In the days of bad roads in Spalding this was an unusual sight — five bales pulled by two mules— but had become a common occurrence.

Mrs. Anna E. Bullard announced the engagement of her daughter, Ruth, and Mr. Cliff Franklin Thornton. Miss Bullard was possessed of those graces of mind and heart which had endeared her to many friends. She was unusually gifted in music, and had a charm of manner which had made her much admired. Mr. Thornton held a responsible position with the New Banking Company and was popular alike in business and social circles.

Mrs. James S. Boynton and Mrs. Hoseph Thomas went to West Point to the meeting of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Boynton went as president and Mrs. Thomas as the delegate of Boynton Chapter.

Miss Hattie Head spent a week in Atlanta, the guest of Mrs. Ambrose Hardnett at her home on Piedmont Avenue and was charmingly entertained at box parties during the horse show.

Miss Kay Craddock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Craddock, left for Nashville, Tenn., where she joined her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wood. They left Nashville on a 450-mile boat cruise up the Cumberland River to Kentucky Lake, to the Ohio River and back to Ala. on the Elk River.

Dr. Joel E. Cox returned to Griffin to resume medical practice here after completing a three-year study in obstetrics and gynecology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Cox is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe H. Cox of Griffin.

Army Pvt. Billy A. Harris, son of Mrs. Mildred Goen of Griffin, was assigned to the 18th Engineer Company at Ladd Air Force Base. He attended Griffin High School.

John M. McLean, son of Mr. and Mrs. Juan R. McLean of Griffin, was among approximately 1,500 cadets from 35 colleges and universities in six southeastern states, Mass. and Puerto Rico, reporting to the 1959 Ft. Benning ROTC Summer Camp. McLean was a student at Mercer University.
