The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office was on Aug. 17 notified by law enforcement authorities in Christianburg, Va., of a child pornography case the agency was investigating.

According to Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart, following the investigation of a child pornography complaint, the Christianburg Police Department (CPD) arrested 62-year-old Richard Castleberry.

In the course of the investigation, officials with the CPD say they located VHS tapes that depict Castleberry molesting children and that evidence also showed the suspect resided in Spalding County at that time.

Authorities say the alleged victims in this case no longer live in the Griffin area, but have been interviewed by officials in the jurisdictions in which they currently live.

Based upon evidence gathered in this investigation, warrants for Castleberry have been obtained charging him with 12 counts of child molestation; two counts of aggravated sexual battery; three counts of aggravated sodomy; and one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

Stewart said Castleberry will be required to appear before a judicial officer in Virginia, at which time he will either waive or fight extradition. If the suspect waives extradition, he will be brought to Spalding County to stand trial.
