From the Annals of 1909

The Huckaby brothers held their first family reunion at the home of their brother-in-law William Fisher, at Milner. Among those present were E.A. Huckaby of Brooks, A.O. Huckaby, L.G. Huckaby, and J.G. Huckaby, of Griffin, and their sister, Mrs. A.A. Fisher. The reunion was reported as a very pleasant and happy occasion.

Roscoe Johnson and Bailey Fowler went to Columbus to attend the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias, being representatives of Griffin, Lodge No. 80. Dr. J.C. Owen and F.M. Gaissert, past chancellors, also went to attend the meeting and enjoy the entertainments provided for the visiting Knights.

The Women’s Missionary Society met at Union and quilted three quilts that they had pieced for Hapeville Orphans’ Home. A number of the ladies of the community helped. At noon a lunch was partaken in the shade of the large trees, which was very much enjoyed. After this all went in the church and finished the quilts and the program was rendered.

A most delightful event was the combined domino and bridge party given by Miss Rossie Bell Newton with Miss Clarence Houser and Miss Mamie Miller, of Ft. Valley, as honor guests.

Carol Shockley, runner-up winner in the local Stars of Tomorrow contest appeared on the Freddie Miller Stars of Tomorrow Show over WLWA television.

Julian P. Cooke, son of Mrs. Julian R. Cooke of Barnesville, wrote a new laboratory manual for college biology and the San Antonio Jr. College, Texas, where he was a member of the faculty.

Paul Milner, foreman of the cutting dept. at the William Carter Co., was awarded a service pin for 25 years.

Wayne Fears, of Griffin, was one of ten men students at LaGrange College who had been tapped for membership in the local Circle K Club. Andy Owen, of Newnan, was also a new member of the club. Circle K is an international collegiate service organization sponsored by Kiwanis International.

Sherri Oxner represented the Griffin Junior Achievement program at the National Association of Junior Achievement conference in Bloomington, Ind. Oxner, a Griffin High School junior, was a member of the Jr. Achievement company “Auto Aids,” sponsored by the Griffin Rotary Club.

Keith Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Osterland, received his Eagle Scout award at Hanleiter United Methodist Church. The Award was presented by Verner Jimerson, executive committee chairman of Troop 78. Kenneth Cowan was Scoutmaster.

Sgt. Michael G. Sollenberger, son of John C. and Gladys M. Sollenberger of Barnesville, was decorated with the Army Achievement Medal at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Preston L. Stephens, son of Clifford L. and Patricia M. Stephens of Griffin, completed training in fundamental military skills at the Army ROTC basic camp at Fort Knox, Ky. He planned to enter ROTC program at Georgia State University in Atlanta. His wife, Renice, is the daughter of Raymond and Anita Prestege of Griffin.

Bonnie Pfrogner, vice chairman of the Griffin-Spalding County Hospital Authority, was elected to fill the organization’s chair left vacant by the death of Billy Shapard. Leonard Bolton was elected to the vice chairmanship.

Howie Spitzer and Leslie Kitchin Spitzer celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Spitzer were married at Special Occasions.

The Walking for Wellness Club sponsored by the Older Americans Council Inc., had a reception and presented a plaque to former Mayor Raymond Head. Making the presentation was Nellie Rea Gordon, vice president and program chair.

The Eckerd Corp. honored extraordinary women volunteers with its Eckerd Salute to Women program. Mary Stinson and Kate McLaurin of Griffin were recognized for their dedication to hands-on volunteerism. Each local honoree was presented with an award and a specially designed gift pack.

Anna Daniel, the daughter of Mary Frances and Millard Daniel of Jackson, was recognized at the Georgia State Capitol with two resolutions honoring her for her state and national work with 4-H. Daniel, a senior at Spalding High School was the only Georgia member of the National 4-H Council.

Joe and Ronda Davis celebrated their first wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Travis, Ronald and Opal. The couple were married at Countyline United Methodist Church. They planned to celebrate with a trip to the mountains.

Jay and Lisa Jones celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Brent and Alexis. The couple planned to celebrate with a dinner out of town. They were married at Hammond Drive Baptist Church.

Chief Appraiser for Spalding County Tim Whalen presented a program at the Elks Lodge. Whalen pointed out that the tax digest for Spalding County doubled in 10 years. President of the Spalding County Kiwanis Club presented Whalen with a pen thanking him for his presentation.
