The Spalding County Fire Department (SCFD) and Baskin-Robbins are teaming up Wednesday in a fund-raiser to benefit two charities ” the SCFD’s Firefighters for Kids and the Volunteer Fire Council ” by offering a special discount on ice cream that will be served by local firefighters.
“It’s actually Baskin-Robbins that’s doing it. We’re just going to be the draw ” that, along with the fact that they’re only going to charge 31 cents per scoop,” said Linda Klaassen, administrative assistant for the SCFD. “I think that’s about a third of what they usually charge.”
Klaassen said the event is a nationwide annual event sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, specifically to raise money for fire-related organizations.
“Nationwide, Baskin-Robbins will collect for the Volunteer Fire Council ” and we’re going to collect for that charity and scoop for that cause,” she said, explaining that SCFD personnel will be on hand to serve customers. “Baskin-Robbins will donate $150,000 to that charity.”
The second charity that will benefit from Wednesday’s event ” Firefighters for Kids ” supports the SCFD’s efforts to provide Christmas gifts for Spalding County foster children. This is something done annually to the benefit of hundreds of children in need.
“As far as our charity ” Firefighters for Kids ” Baskin-Robbins said it will be fine for us to collect for that, too, so we’ll have a boot out there,” Klaassen said. “We will have firefighters there taking and filling orders for 31-cent scoops of ice cream. I’m sure it’s going to be fun for our guys to be there doing that, too. We hope customers will donate the money they would have paid for their ice cream to us so that we can keep doing this for Spalding County kids.”
The event will be held at the Griffin Baskin-Robbins on North Expressway from 5 to 9 p.m.
