Christopher Jones shot a season-best 288 to lead the Griffin High rifle team past Spalding High, 1132-1062, Thursday at GHS on a day where Spalding had three shooters - Austin Bailey (274), Brandon Lazenby (268) and Corey Wadell (259) - post season-bests as the Jags topped their previous season high by 25 points.
The win helped the Bears (5-1, 1137.2 avr.) bounce back from a 1136-1131 loss at East Coweta the week before in a match where an equipment malfunction proved costly.
“The East Coweta match was a heartbreaker,” said GHS coach Julius Lang. “We were beating at 1150 and something goes wrong.”
Rounding out Griffin’s shooters Thursday were: Caleb Pritchett (282), Brannan Smith (281), William Cross (281) and Christopher Norris (290).
The loss comes on the heels of a 1025-982 win last week against Jackson High for Spalding (2-3, 1026.6 avr.), which, according to head coach Rod Sylvester is in a rebuilding mode this season. Rounding out the Jags lineup Tuesday were: Matt Remaley (261) and John Whatley (249).
Both local teams are in action again Tuesday, the third-place Bears shooting at Area 5 West first-place Luella (5-0, 1136.6) and fourth-place Spalding shooting at fifth-place Woodward Academy (2-3, 1123.4).
