Thanks to the school football team’s run to the state semifinals, first-year Griffin head coach Deon Daniel has had to wait two games to get his full roster of players. The wait has been well worth it for Daniel, whose team (2-2 overall, 1-1 Region 4-AAAA) will try to win its third in a row since the team’s football players have reported when it travels to take on Mt. Zion-Jonesboro tonight.

“They’ll play a half-court game,” Daniel said of the Bulldogs. “They’re up and down.”

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro (2-5 overall, 1-4 Region 4-AAAA) defeated Dutchtown 58-57 in overtime on Dec. 9 but has since lost 46-34 to Alcovy and 67-52 to North Clayton.

Griffin goes into the game come off a 62-57 win Saturday at Douglass. Shaq Barber scored 17 points and Ty Turner had 8 rebounds to lead the Bears. Pooh Appling added 10 points, while Oscar Moore and Jamal Clemons scored 8 each to further Griffin’s cause.

In the girls’ game tonight, which tips off at 6, the June Barrow-coached Lady Bears (1-1 overall, 1-1 Region 4-AAAA) will try to shake off the effects of a 54-50 loss Friday night where they missed 16 free throws against Dutchtown .
