Those interested in an evening of family entertainment might want to attend the downtown Griffin tree lighting and Christmas concert Tuesday evening.

“We’re going to have a Christmas tree lighting, a concert and a Salvation Army toy drive,” said Kira Harris-Braggs, head of the Griffin Main Street Program.

She said people who wish to donate to the toy drive should bring a new, unwrapped toy.

As part of the night’s festivities, the Griffin high school choir will be performing, led by their director James Lindsey.

“They have performed all of the state,” she said. “They should be well-received.”

Harris-Braggs said there also will be participants from the city and county government and local churches at the actual lighting of the tree. Afterward, refreshments will be provided by First Baptist Church.

“We will have a truck there,” said Auxiliary Captain Rebecca Butler of the Griffin-Spalding Salvation Army. “We will also have a kettle. The truck is there for any donations, if anyone brings toys.”

She said the truck will take the toys to a distribution warehouse.

“Also, we’ll have a group that will be playing music,” she said.

Maj. Jack Butler, Rebecca Butler’s husband and head of the Griffin-Spalding Salvation Army, elaborated on the band.

“We’re going to have a four-piece ensemble playing Christmas music from 6 to 6:30 (p.m.),” he said.

Maj. Butler said he will play the horn as part of the band but most of the musicians were from Atlanta.

He added that the toys donated will be distributed to needy children on Dec. 23.

Griffin Mayor Doug Hollberg said he wishes to encourage all citizens of Griffin and Spalding County to come out to enjoy the event in historical downtown Griffin. He hopes everyone would bring a toy or monetary donation to the Salvation Army to help them help needy children.

According to the city Web site, the 4-H Festival of Wreaths will be on display in the city courthouse. Participants are welcome to bid on their favorite wreaths and support Spalding County 4-H.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and run until around 8 p.m. Those interested in finding out more information should contact the Main Street Program office at 770-228-5356.
