From the Annals of 1958

Members of the Kingsmen Quartet presented a special program at the First Assembly of God Church in Experiment. The pastor, Rev. John F. Moore, invited the public to attend.

The American Business Club of Griffin celebrated its 10th birthday with a party held at the Moose Club.

Jim and Joe’s Photo Center of Griffin held a premier showing of sound 8mm home movies. This was the first public demonstration of 8mm movies with sound in this area. Children between the ages of 2 and 10 were photographed and given a free 5x7 color enlargement. Popcorn and refreshments were also served.

Two illegal liquor stills were destroyed in Pike County by Sheriff J. Astor Riggins and revenue agents Jack Smith and R. D. Harrison. Officers confiscated over 100 gallons of illegal whiskey and 600 pounds of sugar.

Milner’s Jerry Waites was named second place winner in the public speaking contest in the northwest 4-H District. Waites spoke on “Maintaining World Peace”.

Hampton’s Bobby Whitaker, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whitaker, was elected as the State 4-H Club Treasurer at the 26th Annual 4-H Club Council meeting at Rock Eagle.

The Lay Organization of St. Phillip A.M.E. sponsored a sightseeing tour to Philadelphia.

Long-time Griffin professional photographer Joe Johnson received a plaque to commemorate his being named Rotarian of the Year by the Griffin Club.

Some 26 graduates of Spalding High School attended their 50th Reunion at J. Henry’s restaurant. Thirty-four of the class members were still living.

Members of the Griffin BPW Club honored Nell Tanner as the Woman of the Year at Holiday Inn.

Video Magic and Varsity Sports Center were the recipients of the Good Sportsmanship Awards for 1986 in the Dixie Youth baseball program.

Griffin resident Jill Matlock, a pre-education sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was chosen to attend LeaderShape Nebraska. The program was a six-day, on-campus seminar exposing students to issues of leadership and development.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented Griffin High School JROTC cadets with certificates of appreciation for volunteer service.

The Griffin Kiwanis Club and the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce honored the top high school student and teacher at a luncheon. Griffin High senior George Voley Granade II was named the 1998 Student Teacher Recognition (STAR) program student for having the school’s highest score on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) with a score of 1560 out of 1600. Granade chose Latin teacher Todd Benz as his STAR teacher.

The Griffin Moose Lodge donated a truckload of canned goods to the Five Loaves Two Fish Food Pantry. Paul Kurtz of the food pantry accepted the donation from Hugh Bilbo of the Moose Lodge.

The Exchange Club provided a place to deposit old American Flags. The flags were then given to the boyscouts for them to use during their flag retiring retreats.

The Pike County Kiwanis held its first annual Pride of Pike Scholarship Pageant at the Pike Auditorium.

Ronald Taylor, a student of the Adult Literacy Program of Griffin Tech, was chosen to compete in the 2003 State EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) Awards Program.

The All Denominational Choir Association of Lamar, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties celebrated their 39th anniversary at Fairfield CME Church in Hollonville.

Parks and Recreation, along with the Atlanta Falcons, Griffin High School, Spalding High School, Spalding County Collaborative Authority and the Spalding County Cheerleader Association sponsored a free youth football camp and cheerleader camp for youth ages 7-12. The camps were held at Memorial Stadium.

The Griffin High School Diamond Club hosted the second annual Griffin Bears Fall Classic 16-U baseball tournament at GHS.

Spalding Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer John Quinn spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Spalding Regional Urgent Care Center at Heron Bay.

The General Lewis Lawrence Griffin Statue Committee commissioned artist and sculptor, Andy Davis, to create the statue of the man who founded Griffin in 1840.

The Chick-fil-A Cow visited Cowan Road Elementary School to congratulate the Commendable Colts.

More than 25 first responders, including Sheriff Dee Stewart, were honored during a service at Griffin First Assembly of God. In appreciation, each responder received a gift card.
