Pike 8th-graders fare poorly on CRCT math

ZEBULON - When the results of Georgia’s 2008 Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) were released in the spring, 48 percent of the state’s eighth-graders did not meet the minimum standard in mathematics.

Approximately 62.4 percent (290 students) of Pike County’s eighth-graders were in that number.

The Pike County School System held a two-week remedial program and re-tested 180 eighth-graders.

Fifty-five percent passed the re-test.

Pike chamber makes profit from celebration

For the first time in three years, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce is reporting a profit from its annual Fourth of July Celebration.

The chamber reported Friday that although the event lost $3,100 in 2006 and $5,535 in 2007, this year’s event made a profit of $339.10.

The chamber’s decision to close the road and charge $5 for parking this year is credited with creating the profit.
