People from all walks of life picked up rakes, hammers and wheelbarrows, and rolled up their sleeves Saturday to participate in Kiwanis One-Day.
For the second consecutive year, the international event called for Kiwanis members around the globe to come together, at the same time, for a community service project.
According to Kiwanis Club of Griffin member Michelle Cannon, the local organization focused on the renovation of the courtyard at Mainstay Academy in Griffin.
“We’re putting in gardens, fixing the greenhouse, putting in raised beds, painting picnic tables, and doing general cleanup,” Cannon said Saturday in between giving out work details and fielding questions over her walkie-talkie.
Despite Saturday’s on-and-off-again rain, the community rallied behind the project. More than 200 individuals from organizations like the Junior ROTC at Spalding and Griffin high schools, Boy Scout Troop 77 and other groups joined in.
“We advertised it in the community to make a difference in the community,” Cannon said, acknowledging that there were a number of church organizations and community service clubs, other than Kiwanis, present.
“We have people who just heard it on the radio and showed up with their landscape crews,” she said. “It’s just been a tremendous outpouring of community involvement.”
