The wreck, which occurred at 11:44 p.m. on Highway 19 North, in Zebulon, resulted when a Ford 500 travelling southbound is believed to have crossed over several lanes of traffic and struck a Ford Aerostar minivan, travelling northbound, nearly head-on.
“We can confirm a fatality of a 52-year-old white male,” said Pike County Coroner Terrell Moody. “Of course we have to withhold the victim’s name, pending notification of next-of-kin.”
The single confirmed fatality was the driver of the Aerostar.
Two additional male victims, one from each vehicle, were injured in the incident.
“We took one patient from the Aerostar — he went to Spalding Regional Medical Center — and we took one patient from the Ford 500 — he went to Upson Regional Medical Center,” said Pike County Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Todd. “I don’t know how it happened. I just know it took two hours to get everyone out.”
Officials with the Pike County Sheriff’s Office are in charge of the investigation.
“As far as what happened, we’re unsure at this time,” said Deputy Shannon Molton, lead investigator in the incident. “It’s pending investigation.”
Molton did say the victim’s body will be taken to the state crime lab Thursday morning.
