Editor’s note: Saturday’s games were not complete in time for this edition. See Tuesday’s Griffin Daily News for a complete recap.

Marquis Brown and Vinson Woods scored 11 points each and Brandon Gaughren added 10 Friday night as the Spalding High boys team posted its first win of the season, 51-49, at Luella.

It was the first game in the lineup for Gaughren this season, who was scratcher from the lineup for discipline reasons prior to last week’s 46-44 season-opening loss to Southwest-Macon.

Third-year Spalding head coach Cecil Spear was glad to have him back in the lineup Friday.

“I made him a starter and a captain and I challenged him before the game,” said Spear.

He responded with a double-double, adding a team-high 13 rebounds in a game that was close throughout and Spalding (1-1) led down the stretch and held on to win.

In the girls game, Spalding tasted defeat for the first time this season, falling to Luella 52-44. Niesha Williams scored 18 to lead Spalding (1-1). Shakeva Richards added 9 and Shay Williams contributed 7 points to further Spalding’s cause in a game where the Lady Jags trailed 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and 27-14 at the half.

“We got off to a slow start and had too many turnovers,” said second-year SHS head coach Shawn Thompson, citing 26 all together - many of them unforced.

Spalding outscored Luella 12-10 in the third and 18-15 in the fourth, but it was too little too late.
