Griffin High head football coach Steve DeVoursney was happy with the proposed region realignments for the next two-year cycle the GHSA realignment committee released Thursday after its scheduled meeting.

It keeps Griffin in a paired down Region 4-AAAA which would be comprised of Alcovy, Dutchtown, Forest Park, Jonesboro, Mt. Zion-Jonesboro, North Clayton, Ola and Stockbridge if no changes are made.

DeVoursney, however, doesn’t expect it to last.

“I wish that was going to be the case, but that’s not likely going to be our region,” he said Thursday night. “Upson-Lee and Westside-Macon have already appealed to get back into the region and I’m not sure, but Jones County, Harris County and Hardaway could appeal.”

Teams have until noon Dec. 14 to appeal for a lateral move. Upson-Lee, Westside-Macon and Jones County currently reside in the 14-team Region 4-AAAA which is subdivided for the current two-year cycle.

The committee is proposing regions for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.

Spalding will remain in a trimmed down Region 4-AAA along with Eagle’s Landing, Jackson, Mary Persons, Rutland, South Atlanta, Southside, Woodland-Stockbridge and Locust Grove. The current Region 4-AAA during this two-year cycle has 14 schools and is subdivided

Pike County and Lamar County will remain in Region 5-AA which will continue to house Callaway, Crawford County, Heard County, Macon County and Manchester while adding Columbus-based Jordan and Spencer.
