The Griffin Police Department is investigating a shooting which occurred at 9:39 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Apartments on Anne Street.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered the victim, 26-year-old Christopher Prince Evans, of Barnesville, suffering from a gunshot wound to his left knee.

Evans, who was visiting friends at the time of the shooting, was transported by ambulance to the Spalding Regional Medical Center emergency room. He was treated and released.

Evans is now recovering at his home and is walking with the assistance of crutches.

“We’re having difficulty investigating this case because the witnesses are providing conflicting stories,” said Cpl. Dwayne Hancock of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division. “However, we have a final witness that we are trying to locate that may be able to assist us.”

At this time, investigators consider the shooting to be a robbery that escalated to an aggravated assault.

“Based on an individual’s perspective, witness statements can be different,” said officer Bryan Clanton, public information officer for the GPD. “It’s a definite obstacle when conducting an investigation. We usually continue to try to re-interview the witnesses -- perform follow-up interviews -- and seek new witnesses who may have additional information to provide.”

As the GPD continues to follow new leads in the case, the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Hancock at GPD headquarters at 770-229-6450.
