The Pike County Board of Commissioners will discuss the purchase of a communications tower at its meeting at 9 a.m. today at the courthouse annex in Zebulon.
The Old Bear Radio Station Tower is being offered to Pike County by Meriwether County and could possibly replace the tower on the Sheriff’s Office building.
Officials say the current tower is susceptible to lightning strikes.
Another point of discussion will be the public use of the boat ramp beside the bridge across Flat Shoals and with that the use of parking along the ramp. “No parking” signs are currently set up at the northern side of the ramp.
Commissioners will also discuss the mileage rate for Pike County employees. The rate is set at 35 cents per mile. Some commissioners have suggested raising it to the federal level, which is set at 48.5 cents per mile.
The meeting will also include an update on animal control issues by Pike resident Don Bailey. Richard Rice, Southeast regional director of the Atlanta Humane Society, will provide additional information on the topic.
Other agenda items include a request by Paul Faulds for funding for service enrichment for the Pike County Library System. Also, the county Recreation Department is seeking permission to apply for a grant to develop a park and recreation reserve for Pike County. Three new members are expected to be appointed to the Recreation Authority.
