No. 5 state-ranked Spalding rebounded from its loss to crosstown rival Griffin Wednesday to improve to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in region play, good enough for third place in the standings.
This game started as a pitcher's duel between Tardy and Upson-Lee starting pitcher Dalton Strom. Spalding took an early 1-0 lead and broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning. Anson Link reached on a fielder's choice and Drew Compton walked, setting the stage for Powell, who lined a triple to right center which scored both teammates for the 3-0 lead. Alec Hayes then singled home Powell and the inning ended with Spalding up 4-0.
The Jags scored one final run in the bottom of the sixth. Louis Farlow reached first on a dropped strikeout and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Evan Skipper then laced a single to center to score Farlow for the final 5-0 margin.
Tardy was excellent on the mound, allowing no runs on the four UL hits. He struck out seven Knights and walked none for Spalding, which travels to face non-region foe Northside-Columbus Monday at 5:30 p.m.
