LOCUST GROVE — The Griffin Bears baseball team exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-6 victory over the Locust Grove Wildcats Thursday evening in Region 4-AAAA action on the road.

No. 9 state-ranked Griffin still keeps its share of first place in the standings with its fourth straight win, improving to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in region play while fourth-place Locust Grove falls to 6-6, 6-4. The Bears share the “penthouse” with Dutchtown (8-4, 7-2 region), which blasted North Clayton 16-1 Thursday to remain in first with Griffin.

“We came out flat, which I felt would happen after our big game against Spalding. But we hung around and Montico Dodson kept us in the game from the mound,” said Bears head coach Kevin Mobley. “We took advantage of Locust Grove’s mistakes and eventually won the game.”

With LG leading 1-0, the Bears put the game away in the top of the fourth inning. Griffin loaded the bases and a couple of Bears came home on walks. Keyston Fuller then smacked a two-run triple, clearing the bases en route to a big inning and an 8-1 lead.

Locust Grove eventually cut the lead to 8-6, but the Bears scored three insurance runs in the seventh for the final 11-6 margin. Montico Dodson pitched five innings for Griffin, giving up five runs (2 earned) on 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. His brother Quantico Dodson pitched one inning, giving up the final LG run while walking one and striking out one. Daniel Gooden pitched the seventh inning, striking out two.

Fuller went 2 for 3 with the 2 RBIs and Quantico Dodson and Cornelius Randolph both had two hits in the contest for Griffin, which is off until March 27 when it travels to play region foe Stockbridge at 6 p.m.
