LOVEJOY — The Griffin Bears and Lady Bears track and field teams gave a good accounting of themselves at the South Metro Classic Track Meet Tuesday afternoon at Twelve Oaks Stadium next to the Lovejoy High campus.

Griffin High’s combined boys and girls scores totaled to 232.50, good enough for third place out of five teams. Newnan’s combined scores allowed it to finish first overall with 296 points, followed by Mundy’s Mill (269.50), Griffin, Riverdale (150) and Lovejoy (142). The Bears finished first with 144 points while the Lady Bears finished third with 88 points.

Finishing below the Bears in the boys events were Riverdale (127), Mundy’s Mill (121), Newnan (119) and Lovejoy (71). In the girls events, Newnan was first with 177 points, followed by Mundy’s Mill (148), Griffin, Lovejoy (71) and Riverdale (33).

“The teams had fun out there and this finish shows we’re coming together as a team,” said Griffin head coach Kennedy Holt.

The Bears and Lady Bears had several athletes who ran well on the afternoon. The Bears did especially well in the field events, finishing first in the High Jump and Discus and second and third in the Triple Jump.

Lady Bears senior Chelsea Prather was the standout girls athlete for Griffin Tuesday, finishing first in the 100m hurdles at 16.77, first in the Long Jump at 16’3” and first in the Triple Jump at 33.8.

“It feels good to win these events, but I still have to get my times better,” said Prather. “I just have to keep working at it.”

Other Griffin athletes who performed well were Keondra Barkley, who ran 55.29 in the girls 300m hurdles for second place; Arbrea Parker, who finished second in the girls 400m run; Jontavious Sullivan, who ran a 43.62 to finish first in the boys 300m hurdles; Jordan Colbert, who cleared 5'8" in the boys High Jump and Benjamin Barlow, who finished second in the boys 3200 meter run.

“I’ve been working hard since last year, so I was happy to finish first in the hurdles,” said Sullivan, a junior.
