RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Griffin High shot an 1130 to place fourth Thursday at the Area 5 Rifle Championships held at the Ole Mill Range. Union Grove shot an 1156 to top the nine-team field, followed by Monroe Area (1136) in second and East Coweta (1134) in third.

Rounding out the top six teams — which now advance to Sectionals on March 26 — are Luella (1128) and Woodward Academy (1112) in fifth and sixth, respectively. From there the 24 winning schools advance to semifinal-round competition on March 31. The top 14 teams and 56 individuals advance to the state championship April 16 at Fort Benning in Columbus.

Rounding out Griffin’s lineup at Area were: Kayla Colett (287), Ale Gonzales (285), Grace McLean (282), Jessica Harry (276), Laura Boyd (259) and Twilight Moody (194).

Spalding High’s Byron Blackmon (281) competed as an individual.

Both Gonzalez and Blackmon have qualified for the state championship as individuals during their senior years, Blackmon by shooting a 291 during a regular season match at Woodward Academy and Gonzalez by shooting a 290 during a regular season match at home against Creekside.

KIWANIS KIDS LEAGUE: The Kiwanis Kids league will begin playing baseball at the First Christian Church on the corner of Pinehill Road and Poplar Street at 9 a.m., March 23 and each Saturday through May 4.

An end-of-season party, complete with trophy and medallion presentations, will follow at the end of the season.

EXCHANGE GOLF TOURNEY: The 10th Annual Griffin Exchange Club Charity Golf Tournament is noon, Wednesday April 24 at the Morgan Dairy Golf Club.

MOTHERS DAY GOLF TOURNEY: The inaugural Mother’s Day Golf Outing, sponsored by The Caring House, is 8:30 a.m., Friday, May 10 at the Griffin City Golf Course. Fee for the four-man Fort Lauderdale is $50 per person which includes green fees, cart and range balls.

Prizes will be awarded for top score, longest drive and closest to the pin. You can also win a new car with a hole-in-one on a designated hole.

HUNTER SAFETY: Free hunter safety courses, sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, the Griffin Gun Club and DeVotie Baptist Church, are being offered locally.

Test-only dates from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at DeVotie Baptist Church in Griffin are offered on: March 19, Sept. 3, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.

Dates with a two-hour review, test, lunch and supervised shooting session are offered from 8 a.m., until 1:30 p.m., on: March 16 and Sept. 7 at the Big Red Oak Plantation in Gay; May 11 at Cherokee Rose Shooting Resort; and on Aug. 17 at the Griffin Gun Club.
