The Griffin Bears baseball team won its second straight game, rolling past the Upson-Lee Knights 11-4 Friday night in Region 4-AAAA action at the Bear’s Den.

Griffin, which belted 11 hits on the night, keeps its hold on second place in the standings at 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the region while Upson-Lee falls to 4-7, 3-4.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Griffin responded with three runs in the bottom half to take the 3-1 lead. Daniel Gooden had an RBI single while Bears starting pitcher Montico Dodson helped his own cause with a 2-run single.

An RBI-single from Griffin’s Marquavious Brownlee and a sacrifice fly by leadoff hitter Quantico Dodson in the fourth inning put the Bears ahead 5-1 before Upson scored a run on an RBI double to deep center by Knights catcher Austin Matson in the top of the fifth.

The Bears broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs in the inning. Tripp Bridges had an RBI single and Brownlee had a 2-run triple and scored on a sac fly to open the floodgates for Griffin. Later in the inning, Cornelius Randolph’s RBI double scored Keyston Fuller to give Griffin the 11-2 lead. Gooden nearly ended the game with what looked to be a solo home run to right field, but the ball stayed in the park and was caught for the final out of the inning.

Upson scored two unearned runs off relief pitcher Randolph for the 11-4 score in the sixth. Trey Mallett pitched the seventh and had one strikeout and two walks. Montico Dodson went 5 innings, with six strikeouts and two walks — he allowed four hits and allowed one earned run. He also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run and two RBIs.

Brownlee went 2 for 3 with a run and 3 RBIs, Telly Sloan went 2 for 2 with 2 runs and Quantico Dodson had 2 RBIs on sac flies for Griffin, which travels to play region foe North Clayton Monday at 6 p.m.
