Spalding, Griffin girls tennis teams battle

Spalding High swept Griffin High in Region 4-AAAA tennis on Friday at SHS, with the Jags winning 5-0 and Lady Jags winning 3-2.

Brett Piland (8-0), Colby Willis (8-0) and Barrett Lavender (8-3) swept No. 1-3 singles, while the team of Daniel Blake and Andrew Winter (8-2) and James Dunaway and Benjamin Parker (8-4) swept No. 1 and No. 1 singles, respectively as Spalding (8-2 overall, 4-0) remained undefeated in region play.

The Griffin boys team (3-7 overall, 3-4 region), meanwhile, lost for the second time in the last two matches.

The girls match came down to No. 3 singles where Spalding’s Hayley Bair won 9-8 (10-4). Also scoring points for the Lady Jags were Garrett Mixon and Marge Copeland (8-4) at No. 1 doubles and Jessica Howell and Cora Pursley (8-6) at No. 2 doubles.

Rebecca Rose Hill won 8-4 at No. 1 singles and Sarah Mallett won 8-6 at No. 2 singles to lead the Griffin Lady Bears (6-4 overall, 5-2 region) which had a season-best four-match win streak snapped.
