The Griffin Bears baseball team rallied from two deficits to beat the Eagle’s Landing Golden Eagles 10-5 Thursday evening in Region 4-AAAA action at the Bear’s Den.

The Bears ended their three-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in region play while EL falls to 2-7, 1-5.

Griffin started the game with a 1-0 lead off EL pitcher Fontayne Washington, but the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the third inning off an error to take a 2-1 lead. Griffin got those runs back in the bottom of the third. Quantico Dodson tripled and Washington balked him home for the 2-2 tie and four batters later, he threw a bases-loaded walk to Montico Dodson to give the Bears the 3-2 lead.

The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when the Golden Eagles scored two more runs off starting pitcher Devonta Stanford — on a sacrifice fly and an error — to take a 4-3 lead. That didn’t last long, however. In the bottom of the fifth, Griffin’s Keyston Fuller walked, stole second and reached third on the throwing error. DH Daniel Gooden then blasted a triple to left, scoring Fuller to tie the game at 4-all. After a walk to John Pope, Montico Dodson grounded out to score Gooden and Telly Sloan singled home pinch-runner Dee Underwood from second to give the Bears the lead for good at 6-4.

Griffin scored four more runs in the sixth for insurance and EL scored one final run off relief pitcher Quantico Dodson for the final 10-5 margin. Stanford went 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run on four hits with no strikeouts and 3 walks for Griffin, which hosts region foe Upson-Lee today at 5:55 p.m.

Newnan 4, Griffin 0 (Wednesday):

NEWNAN — Bears senior Thrayland Lowe pitched a complete-game three-hitter, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears lost 4-0 to the Newnan Cougars in a non-region road contest Wednesday evening.

Griffin only managed two hits in support of Lowe — singles from John Pope and Tripp Bridges. The Bears turned in three double-plays in the game for Lowe, who struck out one and walked six in the contest.
