After allowing a lead-off hit, Jaguars pitcher Parker Powell retired three straight batters in the top of the first, followed by a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning by Woodland pitcher Eric Smith.
Powell fought through the second after allowing two runners with the help of catcher Evan Skipper’s throwout on a steal at second. In the bottom, Powell Krepps and Alec Hayes traded hits to lead off, then Louis Farlow took a pitch in the back to load the bases. Skipper proceeded to drive in all the runners with a stand-up triple to right-center, pushing the score to 3-0. Designated hitter Dustin Tardy followed with an RBI single to left, and moved over to third off a bunt from freshman Drew Compton. Powell then drove him home with an infield grounder to second, extending the Jaguar lead to 5-0.
Woodland squeezed one in with two hits in the top of the third, but Spalding couldn’t capitalize on walks in its half of the inning, leaving two men on for the final out.
An outfield error scored the Wolfpack’s first run of the fourth, followed by and RBI grounder from junior T.J. Riles, tightening the lead up 5-3. Powell struck out the next batter, but Skipper dropped the ball, resulting in a throw-down to get the final out. First baseman Alec Hayes lost it in the sun, letting the ball get by him and allowing two more runs to score, tying the game at five. Woodland loaded the bases again, but Powell held on this time, retiring the batter to record his final out.
Woodland took the lead in the fifth, scoring two on a triple to right to make it 7-5. Spalding ended the inning on a diving catch from center fielder Farlow, robbing Riles of his fourth hit of the day. Hayes drove in Anson Link to bring the score within one at 7-6 in the bottom half of the inning.
Woodland scored twice in the top of the seventh, bringing its lead up to 9-6. In the bottom half of the inning, Krepps was up with two outs, a man on first, and a full count, but he couldn't deliver any more runs for the Jags.
Spalding’s next game will be at home against region opponent Stockbridge on Friday before traveling to Locust Grove next Monday for what may be the match that will decide the top spot in Region 4-AAAA.
